A quick antidote to Depression
By Kevin

I was sadly reminded this past week of the power that depression has on an individual. As someone who has been through depression, I the depths and power that helplessness and hopelessness has on an individual. As I have become a sought-out therapist and addictions counselor, I have learned how to help individuals move through depression and come through the other side of the deep and dark times.

Along the way, another client of mine taught me a very powerful vision of what depression can do. He said it like this, "Kevin...the problem with depression is that it begins to grow very silently. If depression could talk, it would say something like this, 'stay here on the couch and do nothing. Here take the remote control of the television. Here's a soda. Here's a blanket. Just be comfortable. You don't really want to do anything anyways...'"

But he continued, "The larger problem with depression is this, 'It gets stronger and stronger. It becomes a VICE GRIP and it's almost impossible to get out of. That's when depression is at its worst.'"

What a powerful reminder to me of my truer need to help provide some practical steps to defeating depression.

Depression feeds of inactivity and doing nothing. Depression wins when we do nothing about it.

I then went steps furhter with this young man and developed an indivdiual antidote for him...taking action.

Activity beats depression every time. It doesn't matter what the activity it is, it can't keep up with movement. With him, I challenged and nudged him to stay active, even if he didn't feel like it. He could take baby steps, such as taking a shower every day to going for a walk to looking for employment. Little by little he began feeling better.

Activity and accomplishment, no matter the size, increases drops of seratonin and dopamine inside the brain. These neurochemicals lead to an increase in "good feelings" through the day.

If you're feeling down in the dumps...take action and get moving.

Calm & Clarity to you,

Kevin
