Pain's Purpose and Message

by Kevin R. Foley, M.Ed., LPC

About 15 years ago I had my first experience with arthritis. Doctors would soon diagnose me with Psoriatic Arthritis, which is combination of skin and arthritic condition. Physical pain has been my constant companion since that time. There are some days I will know a significant change in weather will surely occur within 48 hours, depending on the intensity of pain.

Pain's Purpose

From a practical approach, physical pain in our body is a signal to "stop using this part of your body, for it will do more damage than good." Pain is there to remind us of the body's physical limitations. The pain is to clue us to take it easy on the body, as we only get one.

Pain's Message

Physical pain sends us a message. Physical pain is reminder to us all of our physical limits. None of us make it out of this world with our body. Physical pain gently nudges us to "take it easy on this one body you have." Pain pushes us to make the most of every movement and even begs the question, "is this movement necessary right now?" Pain tugs at us to remember our own mortality. We are not meant to be living for ever.

Each day pain reminds me of the value of the day I do have on this earth, among each and every person I encounter. Physical pain reminds me to cherish the body I do have and to use it wisely.
