The Second R

by Kevin R. Foley, M.Ed., LPC

I remember a short phrase about the importance of school. The phrase stressed education as essential to helping us learn the "Three Rs" - Reading, Writing, and Arthimetic.

This week, I pass along a reminder of three more important Rs to your success. Yesterday, I recalled the importance of Respecting Yourself. Today is the second R.

Respect Others

Marcus was a kid I counseled informally through years of a being involved in a corrections program. I loved talking him, and the feeling seemed mutual. After one of his weekly outbursts, Marcus began to calm down and listen to my message. I mentioned "Remember the Golden Rule."

Marcus looked like I was speaking a foreign language. "What the heck are you talking about?" Marcus had never heard of the concept. He agreed to sit down with me in his cell, and I explained to him a fundamental principle of reciprocity: Do onto others as you want them to do to you. Marcus' thinking quickly tried to make it a demand, "well, those dudes better respect me first."

The more I talked with Marcus, the more I realized something we may suffer. Respecting others cannot be predicted on being respected first. Instead, the more we practice recognizing others, the more we build respect in the world around us.

Now, bravely respect others, and see your life change in an instant.
