Use Your Superpower in Your Life
By Kevin

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”

~ Anais Nin

When you were little, you feared nothing. Learning to walk didn't scare you. As a toddler, you had little reason to fear anything. As a result, you stayed in the moment. You just went about the day, taking one thing at a time.

If you fell down while walking. You just got back up and kept moving. You didn't know it then, but you were tapped into your own superpower.

Wait..."I had a superpower?," you ask.

I suggest that thinking in past tense "had a superpower" is wrong. You always have a superpower within you.

Your superpower is courage.

Courage is defined as, "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." (Merriam-Webster, 2019)

Courage is got you through being a toddler, kindergarten, grade school, and into adulthood.

For me, having to learn how to walk after being born with cerebral palsy was pretty difficult. Growing up without my father who was killed in the Vietnam War was a lesson in perserverance. Struggling through high school and college with academic challenges was mentally difficult. Changing the direction in my career (more than once) was an uncertain venture for me. Having worked with aggressive juvenile delinquent youth in a corrections center has placed me in danger. Having gone through a divorce was scary.

Having gone through ventures, danger, fearful, and difficulty, I've learned the value of perseverance. I've also come to understand five things that have helped me understand when to use courage as an adult.

Courage to know who you really are

Courage to invest in You

Courage to accept discomfort

Courage to Keep Trying

Courage to do what you know is right for you

My guess is that you have been through some bigger challenges than me. The good news is that you and I survived every challenge.

My biggest belief about you is that you are capable of making yourself succeed through the challenge of today and the challenges of this week.

My wish for you is to pay attention to how great you are and stay confident about your potential as a superhero.

Now...go be yourself, regardless of how big the challenge.

Use your Superpower...Courage.
